Kiama Council invited community feedback on the draft Cattle Grid Approvals Policy from 12 January to 8 February 2026. The policy outlines how cattle grids on public roads managed by Council are approved, inspected, maintained and repaired.

Why is this policy needed?

Council is legally responsible for structures within public roads and must issue permissions under the Roads Act 1993 and Roads Regulation 2008. This policy will provide clear rules and reduce risks for landowners and Council.

What does the policy cover?

  • Standards for approval and licensing of cattle grids
  • Minimum construction requirements
  • Responsibilities for maintenance and repair
  • Registration and record-keeping procedures
  • A legal framework for enforcement
  • Ensuring cattle grids do not negatively impact road users.
